There's a version of engagement photos where everyone tells you to wait for golden hour, angle away from the sun, and treat midday light like the enemy. Sydney and Julian's session at The Huntington Library, Art Museum & Botanical Gardens proved that the middle of the day, in the right place, can still hold all the softness and story you're hoping for.

If you've never been, The Huntington is 120 acres of some of the most photogenic scenery in Los Angeles: sprawling green lawns, quiet garden paths, and enough texture and color variation that no two corners of the property look alike. For an engagement session, that variety is a gift. We're not locked into one backdrop or one mood; we get to wander, and the gardens do a lot of the storytelling on their own.

It's also just a genuinely lovely place to spend a few hours with the person you're planning to marry which, at the end of the day, is what an engagement session should feel like more than anything else.

We met midday, when the light is flatter and more even less about long shadows and warm glow, more about letting the couple and the location carry the photographs. Sydney and Julian moved through the gardens the way I always hope couples will: less posed, more themselves. A hand reaching for a hand. A laugh at something only the two of them would find funny. The kind of in-between moments that end up being someone's favorite photo in the whole gallery, even though no one planned for it.

Shooting mostly digital gave us the flexibility to move quickly between the gardens' different pockets of light and shade without missing a moment which matters most when the whole point is to stay present with each other, not stop and wait on a camera.

A Few Notes If You're Planning Your Own Huntington Gardens Engagement Session

  • Midday isn't something to fear. With some shade and the right corners of the gardens, softer, more even light can look just as beautiful as golden hour and it opens up your schedule if evenings are hard to coordinate.
  • Wear something you'd actually wear. Sydney and Julian's outfits felt like them, not like a costume for the camera; that's always what makes a gallery feel timeless instead of trendy.
  • Give yourself time to just be there. The best photos usually happen in the pauses between "posed" moments when you forget there's a camera around at all.
  • Book ahead. The Huntington requires advance ticket reservations and has specific guidelines for photography sessions, so it's worth planning your date a few weeks out.
